Empowering Liberia’s Digital Future: National ICT Policy Unveils Ambitious Goals
Liberia has taken a significant leap into its digital future with the launch of the National ICT Policy, a strategic initiative aimed at fostering a conducive technological environment for all its citizens. The policy, spanning the period from 2019 to 2024, seeks to expand the existing ICT infrastructure and establish a national fiber optic backbone, connecting all 15 county capitals and fostering cross-border connectivity.
At the core of the policy’s objectives is a commitment to advancing various sectors through the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Key targets include promoting ICT in education, fostering innovation and research, integrating ICT into healthcare services, and enhancing ICT utilization in local government operations.
Every year, the policy addresses actionable issues to ensure continuous progress, and in its third year (3), two pivotal concerns have come to the forefront. The first involves the adoption of cybersecurity legislation, a crucial step in safeguarding Liberia’s cyberspace. The Minister of Post & Telecommunications, Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah Sr, highlighted the recent successful conclusion of the Cybersecurity Act of 2021. The legislation is poised for presentation to the Executive Mansion, paving the way for legislative review and enactment into law.
The second major focus for year three is ensuring that 50% of all clinics and hospitals in Liberia have internet access. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of leveraging ICT to enhance healthcare services, improve communication, and facilitate access to information crucial for medical professionals.
Minister Kruah emphasized the importance of these initiatives during a Cybersecurity Awareness workshop, underlining their significance in fortifying Liberia’s digital infrastructure. The Cybersecurity Act of 2021, once enacted, will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and integrity of the nation’s cyberspace.
As Liberia actively pursues its digital transformation journey, the National ICT Policy serves as a guiding framework, addressing critical issues, fostering inclusivity, and propelling the nation toward a tech-enabled future.
